If you ask Dr. David Meban or Dr. Robert Piercey, Campion’s newest faculty members, what their aspirations were when they first entered university both will tell you that a career as a university professor was far from their mind. Interestingly enough, both Meban and Piercey aspired to be lawyers.

“I took classics in high school. [When I entered] Queen's university, where I was working on a liberal arts degree, I was planning on going to law school. I took a classics class and it rekindled my interest from high school, so I made it my major. I gradually got more interested in it and less interested in law,” said Meban.

Meban, assistant professor of classics, and Piercey, assistant professor of philosophy, joined the Campion and University of Regina Philosophy & Classics departments this summer and will begin teaching classes in the fall 2003 semester.

Hailing from Ottawa, Meban’s most recent appointment was lecturer and Loukidelis fellow at Laurentian University. He received his master’s from Ohio State University and his doctorate from the University of Toronto. Meban has delivered and published a number of papers on Latin literature.
Piercey joins Campion from Memorial University in Newfoundland, where he held the position of visiting assistant professor of philosophy. He received his master’s degree from the University of Warwick in England and his doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. Specializing in the area of 19th and 20th century continental philosophy, Piercey has presented numerous papers and published articles on various philosophical issues.

This is the first time either professor has been to Regina, and both have been very impressed with what they have seen so far.

“I like Regina an awful lot. There is something about the streets and quality of architecture that seem very welcoming. It's a city that I never really heard a lot about before I moved here, but when I decided to come here a lot of people told me that Regina was a hidden jewel,” remarked Piercey.
